TITANIC

Wireless.jpg

Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by the White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. On the night of 14 April 1912, during her maiden voyage, Titanic struck an iceberg, and sank two hours and forty minutes later in early 15 April 1912. At the time of her launching in 1912, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people, ranking it as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history and by far the most infamous.

The September 11, 2001 attacks (often referred to as 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States. On that morning, terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the World Trade Center in New York City, resulting in the collapse of both buildings. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

HURRICANE IKE

ike_412.jpg

Hurricane Ike was the ninth named storm, and fifth hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. By the early morning hours of September 4, Ike was a Category 4 hurricane, hitting its peak of 145 mph (230 km/h) winds and a pressure of 935 mbar (27.61 inHg). That made it the most intense storm so far in the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. Ike has been blamed for 129 deaths, primarily in Haiti, which was already trying to recover after the impact of three prior 2008 systems, Fay, Gustav, and Hanna, and in the United States, with many of the deaths taking place well inland. Damages from Ike in coastal areas are estimated at $27 billion (2008 USD). If the estimates are accurate, Ike will be the fourth costliest Atlantic hurricane and third costliest U.S. hurricane of all time.

HURRICANE KATRINA

k_790.jpg

Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the costliest hurricane, as well as one of the five deadliest, in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. The storm weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 storm on the morning of Monday, August 29 in southeast Louisiana. It caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge. The most severe loss of life and property damage occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed.

INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE

indonesia_earthquake_058.jpg

About 5:00 pm on September 30th, 2009 a magnitude-7.6 earthquake shook buildings in the capital, Jakarta, sending thousands of people streaming on to the streets. It struck at a depth of about 30 miles off Java's south coast, the US Geological Survey said, and was the strongest to hit the region since a magnitude-7.5 quake rocked India's Andaman islands on August 10th. The last big earthquake to strike Indonesia, in July 2006, killed 730 people. A massive earthquake off its western coast on 26 December 2004 generated a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
